I continue to explore the bowl both as a functional form and an object of beauty. Bowls – made both in sets and also as individual pieces - and the process wonderfully rich as I attend to the evolution of form; the development of glaze quality and variation of glaze colour.
I work exclusively in porcelain. The influences on my work come from both Eastern and Western traditions and I am particularly influenced by the beautiful shino ware of Japan.
My work has been described as both fluid and controlled.
The table is a meeting place and a point of contemplation. These bowls ask to be filled and to provide nourishment., to be held.
I recently re-read a letter sent to me from a person living in Yokohama who owns some bowls of mine. She wrote ‘I use them on special occasions like parties and I give them the best seats in the cupboard and appreciate them every day’.
The notion of usefulness is central to my making. It is wonderful to know that my pots are gathered and absorbed into daily life.
