Artist Statement

Gary is one of Australia's finest porcelain artists. His work is represented in a number of important private collections and in the Victorian College of the Arts "Margaret Lawrence" collection. His aim as a potter is to produce strong forms that are enhanced by subtle glazes and surface treatments. His forms focus on bowls and bottles of all sizes. Gary never tires of taking time to explore the subtlety of form and the beauty which can result if one is patient. In the last few years he has focussed on the limits of porcelain and very high multiple glaze firings, culminating in a series of folded bowls for the February 2005 "Beyond Earth" exhibition at Manly Art Gallery and Museum. Gary has now moved to sagger firing very fine porcelain with shells. Several of these pieces will be discussed on the ABC Sunday Arts program in March 2006, as part of a special feature on Craft Victoria. Gary will be extending his saggar firing to bone china over the coming months and has begun a joint project with one of Australia's leading photographers.

Gary is available for private commissions, and also offers private classes for beginners, intermediate or advanced students. Class details are available on the Ceramics Victoria website
