Artist Statement

My first introduction to art was in University through art therapy classes that I both took and eventually led. The process of creation was explored to understand and unravel the intellectualization of difficult emotional experiences. Although I no longer approach the creative process from this perspective, it has definitely influenced my decorative pieces in my response to the medium and incorporating natural and man made objects according to mood and whim.

My other passion is cooking and as such I continue to explore functional serve and cookware that is interesting, useful and different. A good example is the Moroccan style tagine that I have redesigned from its traditional shape to something that is multifunctional. The conical lid is lower and wider so that it can be used as a large serving bowl and the base can be used on its own or with a standard 12’ frying plan lid for casseroles, grilling etc.

Something at Mary’s studio displays and sells both decorative and functional ware, with Dijon Foods and the Camellia Gardens Teahouse as an outlet for the domestic ware. I regularly hold cooking and clay workshops at various locations, have students in both wheel throwing and handbuilding, and work on commission for specialty pieces.
